Outdoor Cinema Screenings: Who Needs Netflix Anyway?

Outdoor cinema screenings are getting big. And we mean big big.

Snuggled up on beanbags or lounging on beach-side deckchairs, nothing gets you in the summer mood like watching a flick with a cocktail in hand and the wind in your hair.

With more and more popping up around the country we’ve sought out the coolest outdoor cinema screenings this summer and the best places nearby for a dry martini – shaken or stirred.

Rooftop Film Club, Stratford

Fun-loving bar by day, one of the hottest outdoor cinema screenings in London by night. The film club is based in Stratford and less than a five minute walk from the tube station and some fantastic bars.

A colourful rooftop cinema, it’s surrounded by stunning views and is the perfect location to cool down after a hot day in the office or for an evening Instagram sesh.

As a smaller project, they show only a handful of films but offer a great selection from classics like ‘Jumanji’ and ‘Back To The Future Part II’ to award-winning blockbusters like ‘The Greatest Showman’.

While you’re in the area, try the trendy bar at Moxy Hotel for modern cocktails and local beers.

Luna Beach Cinema, Brighton Beach

Nothing says summer like Brighton Beach, beach huts and free cinema.

The UK’s largest open air cinema shows not only the classics and popular blockbusters but the biggest sporting events of the season – think Wimbledon but with a 99 Flake instead of the strawberries and cream!

Not only do they offer complimentary tickets to some of the outdoor cinema screenings but also have VIP beach huts with all-day screen access, minibars and personal butlers.

Head to Luna Beach Cinema in Brighton for a top outdoor cinema screening

Once you’ve had your fair share of sun and screen, head to Patterns bar for classic cocktails and live music or popular clubbing venue No 32 for a great party atmosphere only five minutes away from the beachfront.

Cult Screens, Oxford Castle Quarter

Oxford Castle

Enjoy films like “Top Gun” or “Coco” surrounded by the beautiful walls of Oxford Castle, nestled in a single or double beanbag.

This outdoor cinema serves fantastic homemade cocktails and local craft beers to enjoy while watching your favourite films on an HD 10-metre screen.

Smack in the centre of Oxford, the fun doesn’t have to end when the credits roll. Check out Jericho Comedy Club to carry on that feel-good feeling or head straight to Sandy’s Piano Bar for a jazzy, “Some Like It Hot” atmosphere.

Cult Screens, Sandford Parks Lido, Cheltenham

Cult Screens gets a second mention on our list of the country’s best outdoor cinema screenings and it’s no surprise considering their fantastic locations.

Whilst a number of films are offered across the summer, nothing makes more sense than watching Jaws surrounded by a body of water.

Based on the edge of Sanford Parks Lido, this screen boasts deckchairs, beanbags and street food as well as the usual summery cocktails, beers and wines.

Going with a loved one? Don’t forget their double beanbags, perfect for summer cuddles in front of your favourite flicks.

Film4 Summer Screen, Somerset House, Covent Garden

The mother of all outdoor cinema screenings, Somerset House is pricier than most starting at £19.75 but it is well worth it.

Somerset House

Film4’s two-week event is set in the stunning courtyard of an iconic neoclassical building with modern favourites like “Inception” and the much-hyped “Call Me By Your Name”.

This screening lets you bring your own food so pop down to PAUL for a £20 picnic for two complete with a tablecloth, quiche, salads, tarts and drinks or fill up on great pub grub in The Wellington’s historic bay windows.

Make sure you get back early though – the best seats fill up quickly and you won’t want to miss the DJs blasting your favourite soundtracks.
