The Art Bar at Leyden Gallery

The Art Bar at Leyden Gallery, E1: Charming, Friendly, Unique

By Peng Hui Lee, Eastender in more ways than one (east end of London, east end of the planet)

This charming modern art gallery on the corner of Leyden Street and Cobb Street, close to Petticoat Lane, is easily overlooked: but whatever you do, don’t overlook it.

Apart from the main focal point of the excellent (and ever-changing) art exhibitions, there’s a bijou little bar at the entrance.

Gallery owners Lindsay Moran and Adriana Černe are always in attendance, and are charming, friendly and knowledgeable. The drinks include a small and interesting selection of wines, beer, and cocktails devised by Adriana. I especially enjoyed the prosecco and rhubarb cocktail, made with rhubarb grown in her own garden.

The gallery holds regular events and entertainments. I attended one of their Sybarite nights before Christmas and had a marvellous time. There were musicians, a stand-up comic, and even a magician. It was the best the best fiver I’d ever spent (though it’s worth noting that some of the evening events are free).

The gallery is close to Liverpool Street station, so if you’re travelling back to East Anglia, do consider dropping by on your way home.
